Gunhild Vatn

I HARV tar jeg utgangspunkt i harven som redskap, og dens tilknytning til jorden, det harde arbeidet og kampen mot sulten. Skulpturen har en horisontal utstrekning, der en serie keramiske harvtenner er montert i en rytmisk formasjon rundt et åpent grid i tre.

Arbeidet er utviklet gjennom en langsom og repetitiv prosess, der hvert keramiske element er presset i gipsform og bearbeidet individuelt. Tennene kan ved første øyekast fremstå like, men den rå keramikken bærer spor av håndens arbeid, slitasje i formene og materialets motstand.

De keramiske harvtennene er vendt innover. Slik oppheves redskapets funksjon og logikk. Det som tradisjonelt skjærer ned i jorda, vender her mot sin egen kjerne og mister sin operative kraft. Keramikkens rå og skjøre uttrykk står i kontrast til redskapets opprinnelige styrke og utholdenhet.

BIO

Gunhild Vatn (f. 1969, Inderøy) er bosatt på Nesodden. Hun har en mastergrad i keramikk fra Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, hvor hun også er professor i keramisk kunst. I sin praksis utforsker hun kulturell og materiell historie gjennom skulpturelle arbeider i leire, keramikk, tre og funnede objekter.

The sculpture HARV explores the harrow as a tool and its connection to the soil, hard labour, and the struggle against hunger. The work extends horizontally, with a series of ceramic harrow teeth mounted in a rhythmic formation around an open wooden grid.

The work has been developed through a slow and repetitive process, in which each ceramic element has been pressed in a plaster mould and individually worked. At first glance, the teeth may appear identical, but the raw ceramic surface carries traces of the hand’s labour, wear from the moulds, and the resistance of the material.

The ceramic harrow teeth are turned inward. In this way, the function and logic of the tool are disrupted. What traditionally cuts into the soil is here directed towards its own core, losing its operational force. The raw and fragile expression of the ceramic contrasts with the original strength and endurance of the tool.

Gunhild Vatn (b. 1969, Inderøy) lives on Nesodden. She holds a Master’s degree in Ceramics from Oslo National Academy of the Arts, where she is also Professor of Ceramic Art. In her practice, she explores cultural and material history through sculptural works in clay, ceramic, wood, and found objects.
