De gjennomskinnelige arkene i boka gjør forløpet flytende. Boka forutsetter berøring, gjentakende bevegelser rundt en akse, bokas rygg. Lys, farger, bølgelengder og tidssoner flimrer over hverandre i det man blar, før arket faller på plass og en ny omdreining tar til. Å bla gjennom boksidene kan mime tida og bevegelsen vi alle er en del av i det evige kretsløpet rundt vår akse; sola.

Sirkelen er derfor det gjennomgående motivet. Orbit er det astronomiske begrepet for vårt kretsløp i solsystemet. Orbita er det medisinske begrepet på øyeeplet. Jeg er fascinert av at øyets bestanddeler deler termer med astronomien og vitenskapen, og deler form med kloden vi bor på, med sola og planetene.

Ved å bruke sarte materialer ønsker jeg å appellere til langsomhet og omtanke i måten vi forholder oss til omgivelsene våre. Jeg er inspirert av tidligere tiders bøker, da de var håndlaget, var en sjeldenhet og noe man gjerne nærmet seg med undring og ærbødighet.

BIO

Randi Annie Strand (f. 1962, Ytre Namdal)bor og arbeider i Oslo. Hun har mastergrad fragrafisk linje ved Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen. Hun har jobbet med ulike teknikker og medier, men kunstnerboka har vært hennes hovedmedium. Hun har undersøkt boka som et sanselig, tidsbasert og metaforisk objekt. Gjennom å tøye form- og materialvalg utfordrer hun konvensjoner rundt hva ei bok kan være.

The translucent pages of the book, ORBIT/A 7, create a fluid sense of progression. The book invites touch, repetitive movements around an axis—the book's spine. Light, colours, wavelengths and time zones flicker across one another as the pages are turned, before each sheet settles into place and a new rotation begins. Leafing through the book can evoke the passage of time and the movement we all take part in through the eternal orbit around our own axis: the sun.

The circle is therefore the work's recurring motif. Orbit is the astronomical term for a body's path through the solar system. Orbita is the anatomical term for the eye socket. I am fascinated by the way the components of the eye share terminology with astronomy and science, while also echoing the form of the Earth we inhabit, the sun, and the planets.

By working with delicate materials, I hope to encourage a slower, more attentive way of relating to our surroundings. I draw inspiration from books of earlier times, when they were handmade, rare, and approached with a sense of wonder and reverence.

BIO

Randi Annie Strand (b. 1962, Ytre Namdal) lives and works in Oslo. She holds a MA from Bergen National Academy of the Arts. She has worked in various techniques and media, but the artist's book has been her main medium. She has examined the book as a physically sensory, time-based and metaphorical object. By stretching form and choice of materials, she challenges conventions around what a book can be.
